The Quick Facts

  • On Friday evening, June 19th, the Justice Department announced in a statement that Geoffrey Berman, the U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, was “stepping down." The White House stated that President Trump would nominate SEC Chairman Jay Clayton as Berman's replacement.
  • Later that evening, Berman released his own statement refusing to step down. He said "I will step down when a presidentially appointed nominee is confirmed by the Senate... Until then, our investigations will move forward without delay or interruption."
  • On Saturday, President Trump fired Berman at Attorney General Barr's recommendation. Barr announced that Audrey Strauss, Berman's former second-in-command, would serve as a replacement until an official successor was confirmed.
  • The Southern District of New York has a storied reputation and has long been one of the most active and influential federal district courts in the nation.
