Plans to Deploy National Guard to Mexican Border
Apr 5, 2018 at 05:18 PM

The Quick Facts

  • Tuesday night, The White House announced that President Trump plans to deploy the National Guard to the southern border with Mexico, stating that the deployment is part of a strategy to combat “the growing influx of illegal immigration, drugs and violent gang members from Central America.”
  • The announcement comes amid reports that a caravan of over 1,000 Central Americans is heading through Mexico to the United States, planning to either seek asylum in the U.S. from crime at home or to sneak in undetected.
  • President Trump first responded to these reports on Sunday via twitter, declaring that there was “NO MORE DACA DEAL,” while also threatening to pull out of NAFTA if Mexico didn’t step up efforts to curb the flow of crime and illegal immigration to the U.S.
  • President Trump has also reportedly floated the idea of using U.S. Military funding to pay for construction of a wall along the southern border with Mexico, after the Omnibus spending bill did not include any border wall funding.

Food For Thought

Does the United States need tighter border security? What is the significance of this latest executive action when it comes to the border between the US and Mexico?
