The Quick Facts

On Tuesday, state lawmakers in West Virginia passed legislation that gives a 5% raise to teachers and other public employees.

Before this pay raise was announced, teachers in West Virginia had been on strike for 9 days. This state-wide teacher strike kept 227,000 students out of school across all 55 counties. According to the National Education Association, at the time of the strike, West Virginia teacher pay ranked 46th among of the 50 US states at $45,783.
