The Quick Facts
- On December 15th, Texas district judge Reed O’Connor ruled that the Affordable Care Act (also known as Obamacare) was unconstitutional.
- The decision came after a case was filed by 18 Republican state attorneys general and two Republican governors in February.
- The ruling was based in the decision that once Congress repealed the individual mandate portion of the law last year, the entire act no longer holds up.
- Judge O’Connor did not issue an injunction, so there will be no immediate change in the law. The case will likely be sent to the Supreme Court.
