The Quick Facts
- Yesterday, Democrats introduced their sweeping plan to transform the U.S. economy to combat climate change and create thousands of jobs in renewable energy.
- The plan, called the Green New Deal, was put forth by freshman congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and veteran Senator Ed Markey of Massachusetts.
- The Green New Deal is a non binding resolution that calls for a “10-year national mobilization” to shift the economy away from fossil fuels. It has drawn endorsement from 6 of the Democrats planning to run for president in 2020.
- When asked how the plan would be paid for, Ocasio-Cortez said it would be “the same way we paid for the original New Deal, World War II, the bank bailouts, tax cuts for the rich and decades of war — with public money appropriated by Congress.”
