The Quick Facts

  • On Sunday, August 18th, the New York Times Magazine published the print edition of its latest major initiative, The 1619 Project.
  • The project observes the 400th anniversary of the beginning of American slavery.
  • The project’s self-described objective is to “reframe the country’s history, understanding 1619 as our true founding, and placing the consequences of slavery and the contributions of black Americans at the very center of the story we tell ourselves about who we are.”
  • The project excited many readers, but also drew a number of vocal critics.

Food For Thought

Will the 1619 Project help or harm our national conversation about race? Was it politically motivated?
