The Quick Facts

  • Yesterday, April 17th, was Tax Day.
  • In honor of the often dreaded, but important, date, President Trump penned an op-ed in the USA Today in which he touted the successes of his administration's tax reform efforts. Many others provided commentary that offered other unique assessments.
  • The tax bill, which was passed this past December, included a cut in the corporate tax rate from 35% to 21% and provided tax cuts to around 80% of Americans (according to the non-partisan Tax Policy Center).

Food For Thought

What is your evaluation of the GOP Tax Bill at this stage? Which aspects of the bill have been successful, which have not, and which are too early to assess?

Tax Dollars for Napping

Timothy Egan

Reader Highlights

This opinion article from The New York Times was classified as a view from the left because it made these types of arguments:

  • Good, tax-paying citizens have a right to voice their discontent when their tax dollars are being wrongfully and curruptively spent, as is the case with the current administration.
  • The tax code is structured to benefit the very wealthy while simultaneously punishing average-income workers, and meanwhile the government continuously runs at staggering deficits.
  • Paying tax is a reasonable civic duty, but not when citizens have to worry the money will just be wasted on things like President Trump’s travel, or Scott Pruitt’s scandalously expensive security detail.  It is hard to trust the president with tax dollars when he doesn’t trust the American people enough to release his own tax returns.

Tax cuts come at cost for our country

Editorial Board

This editorial from The Gainesville Sun was selected as a view from the mid-left because it included these kinds of opinions:

  • The recent changes in tax code law are deeply flawed and demonstrate consequential fiscal misgovernance.
  • Despite claims otherwise from Trump and congressional Republicans, the tax bill harms the middle class; the only permanent benefits ensured are for corporations and the very wealthy, while any savings reaped by the rest of the country in the short term could soon disappear.
  • Spending on the part of both political parties has led to a looming debt crisis, but instead of focusing their efforts on alleviating this, Congress made it even worse with their new tax law, which plunged the country further into debt.

Tax Day isn't usually a day to celebrate. This year is different

Speaker Paul Ryan

Reader Highlights

This article written by Speaker of the House Paul Ryan was chosen as a view from the mid-right because it expressed these types of opinions:

  • For the middle class, The Tax Cuts and Jobs Act will change paying taxes into a simpler process with higher yields.
  • The recent tax legislation included federal tax cuts that will provide much-needed money for those Americans struggling to make ends meet, and it relieves taxpayers of the Obamacare individual mandate burden. The law also prioritizes families, by doubling the child tax credit and making it easier for parents to save for their child’s education.
  • These changes in tax law represent the tax reform Americans have been waiting for. There is already strong evidence that the new law is fixing a once-broken system and actively bettering the lives of American families.

USA Today

America's economy is back and roaring and its people are winning

President Donald Trump

Reader Highlights

This op-ed from President Trump, published in USA Today, was designated a view from the right because it made these kinds of arguments:

  • After today, Tax Day will no longer be dreaded by hard-working Americans, thanks to the historic tax reform that was passed into law without a single vote from congressional Democrats.
  • The tax reform is already working; it has restored competition in the financial sector and allowed companies to create many new jobs, and Americans are seeing increases in their individual paychecks.
  • Signs are good for the U.S. economy this Tax Day: American companies are thriving, corporations are investing in the United States, and Americans are winning.
