Food For Thought

What predictions, if any, can be made about November's midterm elections after Tuesday's primaries? Do the results indicate optimism for Republicans, Democrats, both?

The Quick Facts

Here are some facts you should know before engaging with our spectrum of opinions:

  • Tuesday saw the biggest night in the midterm election primaries season, with these eight states holding primary elections: Alabama, California, Iowa, Mississippi, Montana, New Jersey, New Mexico and South Dakota.
  • The primaries included key races for Senate, House, and Gubernatorial positions.
  • Democrats would need to flip 23 seats in November to win back a majority in the House, and 2 seats to gain control in the Senate.
  • California is of particular importance to Democrats, with seven contendable House seats currently held by Republicans.
  • California’s primary system, often referred to as a “jungle primary,” pushes only the top two winners from each primary election to the general election, regardless of party. Most of California’s primary elections on Tuesday pushed both a Democrat and a Republican on to November’s general election.
