Why It's Relevant

Super Bowl LII will kickoff Sunday at 6:30pm ET on NBC. The game features a match-up between the New England Patriots — led by QB Tom Brady and coach Bill Belichick — and the Philadelphia Eagles — led by back-up QB Nick Foles and coach Doug Pederson.

The Patriots are looking to defend their Super Bowl title and 40-year old QB Brady is attempting to win his sixth NFL championship. The Eagles are looking for their first championship in the modern Super Bowl era. Their last Super Bowl appearance was in 2004. They lost to... the New England Patriots.

Why can’t the Eagles beat the Patriots? Is starts with the coach

This view from the Boston Globe expresses a belief that the Patriots will win the Super Bowl. Here are some of the types of arguments used:

  • Eagles' coach Doug Pederson doesn't hold a candle to Patriots' coach Bill Belichick. Pederson is "destined to get pantsed", just like all of the other mediocre coaches who have fallen victim to "the hoodie" in past Super Bowls.
  • It's quite likely that Pederson will be coaching scared against Belichick, and unfortunately, this is bound to be a losing strategy.
  • Great coaches know how to manage the clock, make quick decisions and call the right plays. Belichick does this better than anyone.

This view from a philly.com sports columnist explains why the Eagles are likely to let fans like him down. Here are some of the types of arguments he used to support his prediction:

  • Nick Foles is a decent quarterback, but unfortunately, he's going up against Tom Brady, a "cyborg" with five Super Bowl rings.
  • The football gods seem to hate the Philadelphia Eagles. This team has a history of raising its fans' hopes, only to crush them at the final moment.
  • The most optimistic Eagles' fans may predict a Philly victory, but most realists understand that a calm, experienced Patriots team is more likely to emerge victorious.

This opinion in the Baltimore Sun suggests that the Eagles could upset the Patriots. Here are some of the types of arguments put forth:

  • It's hard to bet against the legendary Brady / Belichick combo, but there are reasons to believe that the Philadelphia Eagles can pull off the upset.
  • In order to win, Doug Pederson must coach the Eagles with a cool head, QB Nick Foles must play a clean game, and the Eagles' defensive line needs to heavily pressure Brady.
  • The Eagles have already proven their doubters wrong by reaching the Super Bowl. As a result, they can play an aggressive, care-free game that enables them to avoid the late-game melt-downs that have plagued other teams against the Patriots.

Eagles Have the Ingredients Needed to Upset the Patriots in Super Bowl LII

Our Article Commentary

This opinion in Sports Illustrated suggests that the Eagles' could win the Super Bowl despite their underdog status. Here are the types of arguments made:

  • Traditionally, the Patriots have struggled against balanced teams that have a great defense and a strong bench. The Eagles fit this mold.
  • Jim Schwartz, the Eagles' defensive coordinator, is known for calling tons of blitzes and this is a formula that the NY Giants famously used during two Super Bowl victories against Tom Brady and the Patriots.
  • The Eagles' coaching staff claims that their team is one of the most talented groups of players ever. They believe that the Eagles have the players needed to pull off the upset.
