The Quick Facts

  • On Tuesday night, President Trump delivered his third State of the Union address to Congress.
  • After Trump concluded his remarks, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi stood, took the printed copy of Trump's speech and tore it in half.
  • When asked afterward why she ripped the speech up, Pelosi told reporters it was "the courteous thing to do given the alternatives." She later offered further defense of the action, saying: “It’s appalling the things that he says. And then you say to me: ‘Tearing up his falsehoods, isn’t that the wrong message?’ No, it isn’t.”
  • On Thursday, House Republicans forced a vote on reprimanding Pelosi for her conduct. Lawmakers voted along party lines to block the move, 224 to 193.

Food For Thought

Should Nancy Pelosi be praised or condemned for tearing up President Trump’s remarks following the State of the Union? Was the action effective narrative control?
