The Quick Facts

  • After weeks of uncertainty, the International Olympic Committee announced on Tuesday that the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo would be postponed due to concerns around the coronavirus pandemic.
  • The Games have been postponed until 2021, although no specific date has been decided.
  • In a joint statement, the IOC and the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee said: “The Olympic Games and Paralympic Games will continue to be called the ‘Olympic and Paralympic Games Tokyo 2020’ even when they are held next year, and the Olympic flame will stay in Japan as a beacon of hope to the world during these troubled times.”
  • The Olympics has never before been postponed. It has been cancelled three times: in 1916, 1940 (also a planned Tokyo Games), and 1944, due to the first and second world wars.

Food For Thought

How does the postponement of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics affect the global community? Does the decision reflect well on the Games’ leadership?
