On Sunday, Mexican citizens elected Andrés Manuel Lopéz Obrador as their new president.
Lopéz Obrador (often referred to as AMLO) campaigned with a left-leaning platform and promised to fight violence and corruption while addressing poverty.
AMLO won more than half of the votes, giving him one of the largest mandates of any Mexican president in decades.
The President-elect says that he will pay for many of his proposed social programs by eliminating corruption. He has promised not to raise Mexico’s debt and says he will maintain close ties with the United States.
This was AMLO's third bid for the Mexican presidency.
