- Yesterday, December 18th, Republican Martha McSally was nominated to the U.S. Senate by Arizona Governor Doug Ducey. McSally will serve the final two years of Senator John McCain’s term.
- McCain’s Senate seat was originally filled by Senator Jon Kyl, but Kyl announced he would be retiring at the end of the year.
- McSally’s appointment comes after a midterm election loss: in November she ran against Democrat Kyrsten Sinema for Arizona’s other Senate seat but was narrowly defeated.
- Previously, McCally served in the U.S. House as a representative from Arizona’s 2nd district. She was also the first female Air Force pilot to fly in combat.
