The Quick Facts

  • Yesterday, December 18th, Republican Martha McSally was nominated to the U.S. Senate by Arizona Governor Doug Ducey. McSally will serve the final two years of Senator John McCain’s term.
  • McCain’s Senate seat was originally filled by Senator Jon Kyl, but Kyl announced he would be retiring at the end of the year.
  • McSally’s appointment comes after a midterm election loss: in November she ran against Democrat Kyrsten Sinema for Arizona’s other Senate seat but was narrowly defeated.
  • Previously, McCally served in the U.S. House as a representative from Arizona’s 2nd district. She was also the first female Air Force pilot to fly in combat.

Food For Thought

Is Martha McSally the right choice to fill John McCain’s seat in the Senate? Why or why not?
