The Quick Facts
- Yesterday, Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen resigned her position after meeting with President Trump. Her departure comes as the president grows more frustrated with the number of families crossing the southern border.
- Tensions between the White House and Nielsen had been long standing. Nielsen was often viewed as resistant to some of the harsher immigration measures supported by the president and his advisors.
- In her resignation letter, Nielsen wrote: “I have determined that it is the right time for me to step aside...I hope that the next secretary will have the support of Congress and the courts in fixing the laws which have impeded our ability to fully secure America’s borders and which have contributed to discord in our nation’s discourse.”
- Trump announced that U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan will be taking over for Nielsen as acting head. McAleenan is a longtime border official who is broadly respected by Congress and the administration.
