The Quick Facts
- Last week, 2020 Democratic hopeful Kamala Harris released details of her plan to combat the gender wage gap.
- Harris’s plan would place the burden on companies to demonstrate that they are not engaging in pay discrimination. It would require businesses with 100 employees or more to obtain an ‘Equal Pay Certification’ to show they’re not paying women less than men for an equal value of work.
- Companies with pay disparities would then be fined 1% of their profits for every 1% wage gap they allow to continue.
- Revenue generated from the fines would be used to provide for paid family and medical leave. Harris has previously proposed providing workers with up to 12 weeks of paid family and medical leave.
