The Quick Facts

On Monday, the Supreme Court issued a landmark ruling, Murphy v. NCAA, that gives states the ability to legalize sports gambling. Prior to this decision, the 1992 Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) had effectively outlawed sports gambling nation-wide. The PASPA did make a few exceptions, including the states of Nevada, Oregon, Delaware and Montana, and did not apply to a few events like horse and dog racing.

The Court's 6-3 decision ruled that PAPSA violated the 10th amendment because the U.S. constitution grants states all rights that aren't explicitly granted to the federal government, including sports gambling.
