Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, announced on Wednesday that they are stepping down as "senior" royals and working to become financially independent. They also stated that they would be "starting to carve out a progressive new role" within the monarchy while "continuing to fully support Her Majesty The Queen."
Specifically, the couple will forego funding from the Sovereign Grant, the annual funding mechanism of the monarchy.
The couple also launched a new website, sussexroyal.com, with sections explaining their positions on "supporting community," "serving the monarchy," "strengthening the Commonwealth," funding, and media.
The couple, who are 35 and 38 years old, had their first son in May 2019, named Archie. They recently returned from a six-week break from royal duties in Canada over the Christmas holiday.
