Why It's Relevant

During his first State of the Union address, President Trump announced that he would be instructing U.S. Secretary of Defense James Mattis to keep Guantanamo Bay open. Trump also stated he would pursue the detainment of more terrorists at the prison camp.

The move is a reversal from the Obama administration's policy towards Guantanamo. Obama signed an order calling for the closure of Guantanamo Bay in 2009; however, he was unable to close the facility during his administration.

This opinion piece was chosen as a view from the left based on the following types of sentiments expressed:

  • At Guantanamo, prisoners have been held captive without charge for 16 years now, with some prisoners being subject to unfair trials by military commissions or, in some cases, no trial at all.
  • Guantanamo Bay has been the location of countless human rights abuses and actions of torture on suspected terrorists, often justified by unreliable information or false admissions of guilt.
  • American violations of international law at Guantanamo invite “global condemnation” and undermine America's global reputation as a champion of human rights. As such, the facility must be shut down.

This editorial was chosen as a view from the mid-left based on the following types of opinions that were expressed:

  • In the establishment of Guantanamo, George W. Bush created a source of recruitment material for al-Qaeda, received international condemnation, and failed to bring the perpetrators of 9/11 to justice.
  • Trump has falsely claimed that “hundreds and hundreds” of former Guantanamo detainees have returned to terrorist organizations in order to justify its continued use.
  • Trump should pursue legal action against terrorists; however, the conditions at Guantanamo invite a myriad of legal issues that could bog down prosecution of terrorists in the future.

This opinion was chosen as a view from the mid-right based on these types of expressed sentiments:

  • President Obama acted rashly in his attempts to close Guantanamo, and his release of hundreds of prisoners led to many terrorists being able to return to their “nefarious work.”
  • Trump has claimed he wants to keep Guantanamo open in order to be able to use all necessary power against ISIS/al-Qaeda; however, everyone knows that he loves to simply undo anything Obama has done.
  • Hopefully, Trump's motives for keeping Guantanamo open are in the interest of fighting terrorism and not to just tear down Obama's legacy.

The following piece was chosen as an opinion from the right based on these types of arguments expressed:

  • President Trump made the right decision in keeping Guantanamo Bay open; the move will help to ensure the security and safety of American citizens.
  • Trump's move is a departure from the policies of President Obama, who put Americans at risk by releasing detained prisoners from Guantanamo. It's estimated that 30% of these released prisoners rejoined terrorist organizations in opposition to the U.S.
  • Guantanamo Bay is one of the strongest counter-terrorism resources America possesses. Trump's decision to keep the facility open shows how committed he is to eliminating Islamic terrorism from the world.
