Serena Williams and the French Open Dress Code
Aug 29, 2018 at 01:53 PM

The Quick Facts

  • With the U.S. Open tennis tournament currently ongoing, women’s tennis outfits have been a subject of controversy.
  • Much discussed is Serena Williams, who wore a black, skin-tight catsuit in May when she competed in the French Open.
  • Subsequently, the French Tennis Federation announced it would be making changes to the tournament’s dress code regulations which would ban the catsuit outfit.
  • This week, Serena Williams wore a two-toned, one-sleeved leotard and a black tutu in her first match against Magda Linette in the U.S. Open.
  • The ensemble was a collaboration between designer Virgil Abloh and Nike.

Food For Thought

Are women players' tennis attire at professional tournaments problematic? Do dress code regulations help preserve respect for the game, or impose elitist restrictions?
