The Quick Facts

  • Last Wednesday, the State Legislature of Florida passed a bill with new gun restrictions, which was then signed into law on Friday afternoon by Florida Governor Rick Scott.
  • The new law is named for the high school in Parkland where a recent deadly mass shooting led to increased public pressure for gun control in the state of Florida and beyond.
  • The gun control measures contained in the legislation include banning bump stocks, raising the minimum age to purchase a firearm from 18 to 21, and enforcing a three-day waiting period for gun buyers. Additionally, the law includes increased funding for school security, expands mental health services, and allows for the arming of some school employees through a special program designed to arm and train school personnel on a volunteer basis.
  • Hours after the bill was signed, the NRA filed a lawsuit in an attempt to block Florida from enforcing the new law. The NRA claims the law violates constitutional rights, focusing particularly on the age restriction provision.

Food For Thought

What are the pros and cons of the new gun control law passed in Florida? Will the legislation have an impact on the gun control debate at the national level?
