Mar 16, 2020 at 07:11 PM

The Quick Facts

  • During Sunday night's Democratic debate, former VP Joe Biden vowed to pick a female running mate if nominated, while opponent Bernie Sanders (I-VT) planned on doing so "in all likelihood."
  • There have only been two female VP candidates on the major-party ticket in U.S. history. Rep. Geraldine Ferraro ran with Democrat Walter Mondale in 1984, and Gov. Sarah Palin ran with Republican John McCain 24 years later in 2008. Neither was elected.
  • Biden also vowed to appoint the first female African-American to the U.S. Supreme Court.

How will this announcement impact the upcoming presidential election? What does it mean for the future of female candidates in the U.S.?
