The Quick Facts

  • Last week, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company intends to implement changes that will, according to Zuckerberg, change the nature of social media.
  • Zuckerberg said the company plans to undergo an important shift toward privacy, focusing on private and encrypted communications rather than public posts.
  • Facebook plans to achieve this shift partly by integrating Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger so that users could easily message one another across the networks, a change which will include adding end-to-end encryption across all the apps. Zuckerberg imagined the new Facebook as a “digital living room,” where conversations would be private and secure from outsiders.
  • Zuckerberg explained more about the shift in policy in a blog post, where he wrote: “I believe a privacy-focused communications platform will become even more important than today’s open platforms.”

Food For Thought

Is the privacy pivot that Facebook announced last week a big deal? Will it mean significant change for the company and its practices?
