The Quick Facts

  • On August 26th, iconic American comedian Dave Chappelle released a new Netflix stand-up comedy special, entitled Sticks & Stones.
  • Sticks & Stones is the latest of 5 stand-up specials released by Chappelle on the platform. The first two, released in 2017, marked the comedian's first concert specials released in 12 years and proved to be an immediate success.
  • This newest addition has led to much more mixed reviews and considerable backlash, due to its controversial content.
  • Throughout the show, Chappelle includes jokes that many have described as misogynistic, homophobic, or transphobic. Other controversial topics include Chappelle’s defense of Michael Jackson in light of the sexual abuse allegations against him, commentary on abortion, and description of the LGBTQ community as the “alphabet people.”

Food For Thought

Is Dave Chappelle’s newest comedy special important cultural commentary? Does the comedian go too far with his controversial content?
