No More Term Limits for China's Xi Jinping?
Feb 28, 2018 at 10:52 PM

The Quick Facts

  • Xi Jinping, President of the People's Republic of China and General Secretary of the Communist Party of China, currently occupies the highest offices of power for the state, party, and military of China.
  • Since assuming power in 2012-2013, Xi has taken measures to centralize institutional power, enacted significant reforms, and developed a cult of personality to support his leadership.
  • On February 25th, a proposal for a new constitutional amendment surfaced in China’s state-sponsored news publications. The proposed amendment, put forth by the Communist Party of China Central Committee, removes the current two-term limit imposed on the presidential office, potentially extending Xi Jinping’s presidency beyond his current term, indefinitely.

Food For Thought

What does it mean for the future of China if Xi Jinping is no longer bound by term limits? To what extent could the proposed amendment influence global relations?
