The Cartel Attack in Northern Mexico
Nov 7, 2019 at 02:11 AM

The Quick Facts

  • On November 4th, three women and six children, all U.S. citizens, were murdered on a rural road near La Mora, in the northern Mexican state of Sonora.
  • While it remains unclear whether the attack was intentionally planned, those killed were from a fundamentalist Mormon family that had spoken out against local criminal groups in the past.
  • US President Donald Trump offered via tweet to "wage WAR on the drug cartels," but Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador declined, saying that Mexico must deal with these things "with independence."
  • 275,000 people have been murdered in Mexico since 2007, including 33,000 in 2018 alone. The region where the murders took place is in the territory of the Sinaloa Cartel, which was led for many years by the infamous Joaquín "El Chapo" Guzmán.

Food For Thought

What was ultimately to blame for Tuesday's murders? What solutions to Mexico's cartel violence do you support most?
