The group stage of the World Cup has finished, sending half of the original 32 teams home.
The remaining 16 teams will advance to the knockout stage, culminating in the World Cup Final game on Sunday, July 15.
While the group phase sees teams competing in round robin style tournaments amongst their groups, the knockout stage features single elimination matches, with overtime and penalty kicks to determine a winner if necessary.
Some highlights of the group stage include: Argentina's surprisingly perilous advancement, Japan closely edging out Senegal, and the shocking elimination of Germany, the World Cup defending champion.
The 16 teams advancing are Uruguay, Russia, Spain, Portugal, France, Denmark, Croatia, Argentina,Brazil, Switzerland, Sweden, Mexico, Belgium, England, Colombia, and Japan.
